Morpheus 8 Treatment
Morpheus8 is a revolutionary treatment combining the benefits of micro-needling delivered with radiofrequency to contour, lift and tighten the face. The procedure aims to target the deeper layers of the skin, increasing elastin and collagen production, resulting in a more youthful, fresh appearance. I had my Morpheus8 treatment with Lee Garrett at The Cosmetic Skin Clinic in Devonshire Place, and I am thrilled with the results (especially after my skin settled back to normal).
What to expect
I wanted to share my experience from start to finish so that if you’re thinking about getting it done, you’ll have an idea of the process as there are a few things to be mindful of regarding preparation as well as aftercare. My appointment was at noon, but I was asked to come in at 10:30 as they apply numbing cream before the treatment, which must stay on for an hour and a half, but the treatment itself only lasts thirty minutes. When booking your appointment, keep this in mind to ensure you have enough time to go in before the actual treatment.
Aftercare
Straight after the procedure, I didn’t feel much as my face was still numb from the cream, but as it wore off, the best way to describe the feeling was like a sunburn. I was advised that if I felt any pain or discomfort or inflammation, I could take paracetamol or antihistamine, but if you can ride this out, it’s more beneficial for your skin. This is because when your body needs to fight it off, it forces you to produce more collagen, leading to better results. Straight after the treatment, I did experience some redness, but this is expected and goes down by the second day.
The picture on the left shows my skin straight after the treatment and the right image shows how my skin looked 2 days after.
The aftercare of the treatment is super important to ensure the desired results are achieved. A minimum of 3 days of downtime is required, meaning no makeup! By day 2, the redness had gone down, and I developed tiny scabs over my face, but they weren’t hugely noticeable. The clinic provides a non comedogenic cleanser and lotion for you to use for ten days after the treatment to tame the redness and ensure optimal results are achieved. There are also several other things to be aware of in terms of aftercare:
• No hot water (on your face/neck) for 7 days
• No saunas/steam rooms for 4 weeks
• No swimming for 4 weeks
• No exposure to sun/humidity for 4 weeks
• You can restart your usual skincare regime and use active products after 4 weeks.
Just as a side note, 11 days after the treatment, I went to Miami, meaning I was exposed to both the sun and humidity. I developed a rash on my face, so I used the Obagi cleanser and toner plus the antibiotic lotion prescribed by the clinic, which sorted it all out within couple of weeks. However, I would recommend trying your best to stay out of the sun and humid conditions for the full 4 weeks!
Results
Altogether I had 2 treatments, 6 weeks apart, and I definitely felt plumper after the first one. You’d expect to see the full results within 3 to 6 months as this is how long it takes to produce new collagen. I am starting to notice the results already, and I’m super happy with them!
Q & A
My treatment was done by Lee Garrett, and since I wanted to answer all your questions, I thought I would do a mini Q&A with him and Dr Matthew Jarvie-Thomas, who studied medicine at the University of Oxford and was also awarded a First-Class MA (Hons) in Medical Sciences.
Please see his answers to your questions below!
1. What’s the difference between the two treatments? (Ultherapy and the Morpheus8)
Morpheus8 uses micro-needling and radiofrequency to stimulate collagen. This treatment is best for skin quality/skin texture and offers some skin tightening. It has a couple of days of downtime, resulting in redness and usually takes 2-3 sessions to achieve the best results.
Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen and works deeper than Morpheus8, meaning it offers more tightening/lifting effects but doesn’t give the same skin quality/texture improvements. It is a single session (1 to 2 years of maintenance) with no downtime for most people.
2. Is it best to have collagen-boosting treatments (like Forma) before Morpheus8?
You shouldn’t need to have any other treatments before Ultherapy/Morpheus8, they are both collagen-stimulating treatments and work very well on their own. We can suggest other treatments to combine with them if desired.
3. Will Morpheus8 damage my skin/burn it?
Both Morpheus8 and Ultherapy are very safe treatments, and our practitioners are highly skilled and experienced to minimise the risk of complications.
Any heat-based treatment (including M8/Ultherapy) could theoretically cause a burn. In practice, we have never seen a burn from either treatment and we have done thousands of these at The Cosmetic Skin Clinic.
4. Are the results noticeable right away?
Whilst some people may see an initial lift, the full result comes 3-4 months after the treatment.
5. How many sessions do you need for this treatment?
Morpheus8 is usually a course of at least 2 sessions, your practitioner can advise how many sessions you will need to get your desired result.
6. How long does Ultherapy last vs Morpheus8?
Both treatments are long-lasting (over one year), and we typically do maintenance sessions somewhere between 1-2 years.
7. How long is the downtime?
Morpheus8 downtime for the vast majority of patients is just 1-3 days of redness. From the 3rd-day post-treatment, you can wear make-up if desired and carry on with normal activities. Prolonged downtime with bruising, swelling, redness, or textural changes is possible but very rare.
8. What is the best treatment for saggy skin/neck/cheeks/jawline? (I am too young for a facelift.)
This depends on your anatomy and signs of ageing etc, and your practitioner should be able to advise on the best options with a face-to-face assessment. Ultherapy, Morpheus8, dermal fillers, Botox, Skin boosters, and Coolsculpting are among the many options you can choose from.
